Tutorial for coffee filter holders

I have received requests for a tutorial on coffee filter holders. They are fun to make, take only a short amount of time, and only a small amount of fabrics.

So here is the tutorial. I took photos of each step. They are cellphone photos which are not the best but gives the idea of how the steps are to be done.

Finished size is about 7 1/4 wide and almost 6 inches tall.

Questions: JPC57@aol.com

First, iron fabric and cut out two pieces of fabric, the main (outside) fabric and the lining (inside) fabric. Each piece should measure 14 inches long by 8 inches wide.

Next, place right sides together. You will sew a 1/4 inch seam allowance--you can mark the seam allowance or eyeball it as you sew. Leave a 2-3 inch gap as you will be turning this right side out soon. Pin if desired.

Now sew your 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving a 2-3 inch gap for turning. Clip the corners.

Turn it inside out and you will have a sort of "bag." Press the wrinkles out.

Be sure to turn the gap edges under.

Turn the rectangle over so the main fabric covers the inside fabric as shown in the photo--leave at least two inches up top.

Now fold down the top two inches over the bottom part as shown in the photo.

Pin along both edges with a couple of pins, leaving room for a 1/4 inch seam down both sides.

Stitch down both sides with 1/4 inch seam.

Press out wrinkles. Now it is finished!

You will fold the top 2 inches backwards to open the coffee filter holder, as shown.

Back view of top folded down.

Add your coffee filters...

Close top by folding over to the front. And there you go!

East as pie!

Reusable coffee filters and holders

Coffee filters

I mentioned that I make reusable coffee filters and coffee holders today and there was a lot of interest! I do make them for sale and aim to keep the price as low as possible.

Note: Until I learn all the ins and outs of international shipping, I am accepting orders only in the USA. I hope to ship to other countries if there is interest, but encourage others to make their own if possible!

Here is a photo of the coffee filters that I make. This is a #2 cone filter but I can also make #4 filters.
(The odd-shaped filter on the right is for my coffee pot with a basket filter; this is just a simple filter made by tracing around an 11 inch plate and finished by using pinking shears around the edges.)

The filters are 100% cotton muslin.

Coffee holder

This is a photo of a coffee filter holder that I made for a wedding gift for a friend's daughter. Although I gifted them several zero waste items, the coffee filters and holder has been their favorite!

This holder is 100% cotton.

Use and care of coffee filters

Coffee filters should not be used in the washing machine! Doing so will shorten the life of your coffee filter, and it will pick up the taste of your laundry detergent/soap. I simply rinse my filters after use (saving the coffee grounds for the compost). If you want to wash your filter, put your filter to soak for ten minutes in 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide in a bowl of water. Rinse well.

Cost of filters

A set of two filters is $5 plus shipping. I accept Paypal. US orders at this time only, please. Filters, with proper care, should last 6-12 months. I do sell more than 2 filters at a time, of course. This is what my filter looked like after 30 days of use:
